Readings to understand the horse

From ancient treatises to nineteenth-century novels, some books help us see the horse with new eyes.

The relationship between people and horses has been recorded in books for more than two thousand years. Some works have crossed centuries and remain surprisingly relevant.

A treatise from antiquity

The Greek historian Xenophon wrote, in the fourth century BC, a text on horsemanship that already advocated patience and gentleness in training rather than force.

A novel that changed minds

Published in 1877, Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty is narrated by the horse itself and drew public attention to the way animals were treated.

Reading about horses is also learning about patience, empathy and time.
