Caring for your horse on hot days

Water, shade, working hours and attention to the signs of heat stress.

Horses feel the heat intensely, especially when they work. A few simple precautions prevent problems.

Water and shade, always

Fresh, clean water at all times and access to shade are essential. Electrolyte supplementation should follow your vet’s advice.

Adjust the schedule

Prefer working early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and reduce the intensity on the hottest days.

Watch for the signs

Very fast breathing, lethargy, excessive sweating or no sweating at all need immediate attention. When in doubt, call the vet.
